Points of Light Foundation
Points of Light Foundation

The Points of Light Foundation is a national, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that promotes volunteering to engage more people effectively in volunteer service to help solve serious social problems. Local volunteer centers, such as Hands On Coastal Georgia, become members of the points of Light Foundation and then are able to take advantage of specialized program support, technical assistance, skill building, networking, and advocacy. United Way of Coastal Georgia was one of 10 agencies selected across the nation in the fall of 2006 to work with the Points of Light Foundation to establish a centralized volunteer center now called Hands On Coastal Georgia.

The Volunteer Center National Network consists of more than 400 volunteer centers. As a combined force, the Volunteer Center National Network has the power to reach the majority of the U.S. population. Each year, the Volunteer Center National Network connects more than 2.4 million people with over 1 million opportunities to serve. Working in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation and more than 100,000 nonprofits, the Volunteer Center National Network brings people and resources together to change the world through volunteering.

Collaborative members are made up of human service providers, community-based organizations, elected officials, business and civic leaders and families, and concerned citizens. Each collaborative serves as the local decision-making body for its community and develops a plan with strategies to improve results in five areas: Healthy children; Children ready to start school; Children succeeding in school; Stable self-sufficient families; and Strong communities. In 2005, United Way of Coastal Georgia officially merged resources, leaders, and partnerships to become recognized as the Family Connection collaborative for Glynn County.
